This project consists of the complete refurbishment of an apartment in one of the red brick, bay windowed and gabled houses of the western victorian terrace of Oakley Street. The property spreads over three floors plus a full terrace at roof level overlooking the city.
The central idea of the design was the celebration of vertical living by placing emphasis on the new feature stairwell and a three storey bookcase that plays the role of its balustrade.
Originally the stairs were fragmented into two sets making the circulation very complicated. The rooms were small and not well served. A rear extension created the necessary landing space for a single flight stair that is repeated in all floors, leaving the rest of the space in favour of the main living areas. Open living multipurpose rooms are created at first and third floor levels with the master suite utilising the whole of the second floor level.
The highlight of the circulation route is the access to the roof terrace via an electric flat rooflight. The terrace is equipped with an outdoor living and dining area, hot tub, bbq and grass play area for the owners' dogs.
